NSWN 1 & 2 are over and classes have started! We’ll be starting our regular Friday night bible studies this week, with Pastor Ed Kang as our speaker. Here are the times and locations for the next two weeks:

TODAY: NSWN #2 - Look above… [Zoom: Click the image below!] Welcome week is notoriously boring. Really. Boring. That’s why the school’s shortened it this year to just two days. That way people still manage to keep their sanity and not get too discouraged by their university experience before it even begins. Don’t worry though: Koinonia’s got a solution! We have welcome week activities throughout the first week of school. Some are just pure fun (ultimate frisbee!), others are exploratory (go to the cool eats around town), and some are even useful (advice on majors). But the common denominator is the fact that you get to meet people, talk, widen that social circle of yours, find some peeps to friend on Facebook, and generally take a step in a right direction: away from boredom, and more importantly, towards friendships that’ll likely mean something. Small groups meet to talk, hang out, and journey through college together. It’s a place where engineers talk to english majors, vegans and carnivores sit down at the same table, southern Californians and northern Californians have the same classes… Seriously, though, we’re all looking for friends, a place to belong, a safe place to ask our questions or unload our problems. Smallgroups do that. We have regular mid-week gatherings that usually start with a mouth-watering meal followed by a meaningful discussion and always some fun time of just hanging out. So watch the video, sign up and get plugged in!

Koinonia @ Austin has started!

It’s hard to believe, but Pastor Manny & Sunny, Henry & Margaret, and Bryan & Sarah and others are already in Austin… living there! Although it seems like it was just yesterday that they played basketball at the RSF, gave messages at the Lipman Room, and we were in their living rooms hanging out together, they’re no longer in Berkeley. They’re in Austin!

Officially registered as a student group now, Koinonia at UT Austin is for real, on campus, serving the student community and giving the gospel to the people they’re meeting. Let’s pray for them and remember them!

SET: Reason for God

This summer, we’ve been reading through Timothy Keller’s Reason for God. The book is a product of Dr. Keller’s 20 years of ministry as pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City. Keller articulates the questions, objections, and skepticism towards God and the Christian faith from hundreds of conversations he’s had. He boils it down to seven major questions:

There can’t be just one true religion
A good God could not allow suffering
Christianity is a straitjacket
The church is responsible for so much injustice
A loving God would not send people to hell
Science has disproved Christianity
You can’t take the Bible literally

We meet each week to discuss a chapter, helping one another articulate the arguments in our own words, and get equipped to engage our own friends and communities.

Ko-Ops Spring 2008

What is Ko-Ops

Koinonia Operations Groups aka “Ko-ops”? are student led operation groups. We do the ins and outs of Koinonia, and it’s a great opportunity to serve.

Requirements

Regular member of a small group
Some experience in Photoshop or Web is preferred, but may be substituted by an eagerness to learn and be trained

Time Commitment

1 semester
Workdays at YWCA: Fridays 2-4pm

Group Descriptions

1. Publications: Creating designs for various Koinonia needs
2. Web: Keeping the Koinonia website up to date. There are 3 different task groups:

Web Content: Writing the content for Koinonia News (K-news), description of events, and various blurbs as needed.
Technical Team: Implementing updates to the website, creating new pages, and creating sign up pages for various activities.
Picture Coordinator: Collecting pictures from each group and uploading them on the website.

Note: Signups are closed for Spring 2008!
