Last Friday, many of the junior sisters and brothers had the opportunity to help out with the children’s Friday night activities while the Praxis team had a special bible study. What followed was an exciting night of leading Joycorner and J Scouts.

We split up to entertain and teach the different groups of children with different activities. We watched all the kids 18 months old and up. The younger children enjoyed singing/dancing time, a puppet show, and the student’s favorite – nap time.
The 4 years old class got to make magnet crafts, many of them making gifts for Joohye, and do relay races.

I got to be part of the class with the older children in playing “blind swordsman” with nerf guns, making shrinkydinks and sugar cookies, and demonstrating some principles of science with “tea bag rockets” (it was a ‘don’t try this at home, kids’ moment).

Overall it was a fun experience getting to know the kids and take part in serving so that Praxis could have a break. Even though it was tiring, it was another great moment to gain respect for all that happens across our church on a given Friday night!

For those of you who joined us last Friday, you were able to experience the entertaining, somewhat wacky, and downright hilarious atmosphere of TFN gamenight. Whether it was speed-Scrabble among competing teams (who says we aren’t trendy, avid Words with Friends players?) or Richard T. drawing plenty of attention and some exasperation during the talent sharing by singing a medley of the names of all 200+ nations, laughter and joy prevailed throughout the night. Enough explanation, let the games begin!

Last week on Friday, the Freshmen and Juniors made a journey up north to San Rafael for Country Club Bowling! You can bet that everyone showed their best… “game faces”

Normal game faces:

Not so normal game faces:

Um. Yeah.

It was a lot of inter-class fun, along with celebrating every strike and spare.

The ultimate champions of the night were Smith (who bowled an incredible 180!) and Robin, the leader among the sisters with 148. But an honorable mention definitely goes to Isaac  and other “injured” players, who were not kept down despite crutches and bad backs.

Now that takes some serious next skill. Join us next time!

Believe it or not, Welcome Week events have already passed by in a dizzying blur, and we are about to start our first full week of fall semester 2011! Whether it was our daily and rowdy game times during Koinonia Kream, delicious pizza and adrenaline-pumping ultimate frisbee on VLSB lawn, or the massively awesome showings of NSWN, everyone experienced the joy of forming relationships with new people. Here’s a brief recap of some of our events!

One of our most popular events hosted during Welcome Week was the Ultimate Frisbee and Pizza, where about 60 or so students gathered on the VLSB lawn to play ultimate frisbee, then satisfy their tiredness and hunger by feasting on delicious BBQ chicken pizza provided by Pepe’s Pizza.

Don’t be fooled, most of the time, the frisbees are flying ABOVE the ground! But even if they are rolling chaotically on the ground, it makes the game that much more exciting!

Last Friday, newly freed sophomores and juniors gathered together at San Rafael Bowl to celebrate the end of finals and the end of summer school by knocking down bowling pins altogether!

Skills ranged from total novice to seasoned players, but regardless of ability, everyone had a good time cheering one another on.

I think this is “reverse psychology encouragement.”

“Pick up those spares!”

Tactic: INTIMIDATION

Tactic: Strength Training!

Tactic: …Uh… Not sure about this one. :)

Special props to Jin and Matthew for bowling the highest games!

Finally, closing with a caption contest: what is going on in this picture??

Comment with your best caption idea!!

This past Sunday, we commemorated a very special baptism service for seven of our brothers and sisters across our various ministry groups, including Koinonia’s very own juniors Brandon and Phil! As we heard one amazing salvation testimony to the next, it was evident that despite the stark differences in each person’s circumstances and experiences, every story converged to one unifying truth of God’s redemptive and saving power. It was truly a challenging and encouraging time for all of us as we reflected on the miraculous changes in each of our friends’ lives. Our whole church (literally, all of us) then filed outside to cheer on our candidates as they were baptized in Alameda High School’s grand Olympic-sized pool! Quite a step-up from the normal baptism tub we use inside Willard auditorium, if you ask me.
