After Koinonia bible study this past week, our sophomore-junior homegroup went to Versailles to hang out and unwind. Our nice game of Scattergories turned into an all out debate over the legitimacy of submissions like “Fatty Mc-Fatt-Fatt” (for nicknames that start with F) and “Shanghai Spicy Stinky Tofu” (for food that starts with S), and many more. Because there were so many questionable submissions, we decided that the losing team would have to do a punishment as penalty for lack of imagination and to stir up greater laughter for the rest of us. That’s what you see documented below:

Afterwards, someone wanted to watch the scary beanbag video we’ve been watching on Sundays at Gracepoint Berkeley (if you don’t know about this, ask a friend!), and when we turned off all the lights to watch it, it just seemed natural at the end of it to tell scary stories. Here’s the video of it… and though you can’t see anything, you can hear the people screaming in the background.

I think Johnny Y., Josh Y., and Kevin E. take the cake for loudest scream award. You should join us next week!

Welcome week seemed so long ago now that we’ve gotten into full gear with school with Chem 1A this Wednesday and other midterms fast approaching!

We had our first activity as a homegroup this past Friday with just the sophomores and juniors and had a rousing time of Scattegories! (Remember any awesome answers?) An awesome video of our punishment for the losing team is soon to come!

The freshmen and seniors went off to Ghiradelli Square and In-N-Out after bible study!

Since I don’t have any pictures at the moment of our past week’s bible study homegroup activity, here’s a flashback back to some of our past events!

Our last bible study skit: the Race of a Lifetime

Koinonia Kickoff and the Maxwell field night afterwards!

Be sure to join in on the fun next time!

If you didn’t come to Night Market this past Monday, you sure missed out on an amazing event! There were so many people coming from every corner of the campus (evident by the dorm teams) at Barrows Courtyard trying out the free Asian foods in a pseudo-Night Market style.  One sophomore came 30 minutes early just to be able to get in early because she had such a blast last year!

Here are some pictures from the night!

It’s our beautiful banner that some of the juniors and sophomore girls made!

In the beginning when we first began!

Later just a section of Barrows Courtyard, we sit down to watch the battle of the dorms begin!

The whipped cream surprise for the hungriest challenge! (Note: a couple of us tried the bubble gum ball later and found that it was indeed bubble gum and totally doable though we didn’t try it with whipped cream!)

Overall, it was an amazing and very memorable night of fun & food! Don’t forget to join us for Koinonia Kickoff this Friday at 2050 VLSB! We’ll be having FREE boba!

This past Sunday was also the senior’s epic Graduation Sunday!

The seniors superbly sang a sweet and sure-to-honor-God song (I just used alliteration, for those engineers out there who might have been befuddled at the presence of so many “s”s).

For me, I was impacted by the growth of these seniors as they matured from lost, clueless freshmen to the loving mentors we know them as today. Praise God for His faithfulness to each of them!

My older brothers also happen to be really weird..

Anyways, keep studying hard and don’t give up on finals! Even if it looks like you can’t possibly study and remember an entire semester’s worth of material within 10 hours before your final…just don’t give up! Remember in actuality we students have very luxurious lives because we are being paid to study. Steward your skills well and glorify God in all that you do.

Congratulations graduating class of 2010!

Like my fellow author Isaiah K., I will inundate this post with pictures and words of wisdom!

Last night, the upperclassmen bros of our homegroup headed to the beach for a precious time of fellowship and relaxation. I can’t tell you the name of the beach, however, because it is our super secret hangout place. Also, I don’t even know the name of the beach in the first place, so there! (All I know is that it’s in Alameda next to Sushi House).

Anyways, you can’t have a satisfactory day at the beach without having played the manliest of all sports: whiffle ball (in essence, it is exactly the same as baseball, but you are permitted to use a giant bat so that you can never strike out, unless you have no hand-eye coordination at all).

Here is our dramatic, boyband fadeaway shot.

This particular brother was not dressed properly for whiffleball, explaining why his athletic performance was so dismally appalling.

Either Kevan is explaining the rules for whiffleball and Jerome just threw the ball at someone, or they’re attempting a very sloppy performance of our homegroup’s infamous Jai Ho dance.

Either Joe is strategizing how to win the game and Hugo is approximating the distance between the bases, or they are doing the Robot dance quite well.

Kevan was complaining that the pitcher’s throws were too arbitrary and impossible to hit, but I don’t think he really has a right to complain when the width of his bat is bigger than his arms.

The two teams had a very intense skirmish on the sand, but ultimately Kevan’s team won by a fairly small margin. I can honestly say that my team lost only because of one, unnamed particular brother (he is part of the staff and his name rhymes with Freddie Lung) who lacked any kind of accuracy in his throws whatsoever. Fortunately, the rest of the team’s amassed skills saved us from being totally crushed into the sand, and we lost only by 2 points.

Unnamed brother (whose name rhymes with Freddie Lung and is wearing a green jacket so that no one can identify him by his torso) contemplates how on earth he destroyed his own team’s chances of winning the whiffleball game.

By this time, the fiery orb that we humans like to call the sun gradually sank behind the silhouettes of San Francisco’s skyscrapers. As we sat on the sand and marveled at the beauty of the scene, Kevan abruptly told us that he brought us to see the sunset because he believed that it symbolized the end of our undergrad college years (suddenly that sunset didn’t seem so wonderful and magical).

In all seriousness though, the juniors and seniors took turns saying what their summer and post-grad plans were, and we hoped the best for each other’s plans. But no matter what happens, we know that God has something planned for us.

The few, the proud, the upperclassmen brothers of HG KJ.

The few, the shameless, the wackos of HG KJ. It’s one thing for two guys to complete the heart shape, but it’s just plain weird and sad when one guy does it by himself.

After our time at the beach, we grabbed our dinners to-go from the neighboring plaza (is it just me, or does the Chipotle in Alameda give way smaller burritos than the one in Berkeley?) and headed back to Central to watch Ajith Fernando’s message on the sovereignty of God during suffering. Personally, I was really blessed by Dr. Fernando’s encouraging words and stories of heroes of faith who never gave up on their vision for God. After all, if God transformed Jesus’ humiliating and excruciatingly painful execution on the cross into the greatest triumph over sin in all of history, does He not wield the power and wisdom to change the trials and suffering we are enduring into something wonderful and priceless? Dr. Fernando himself said that the sovereignty of God will not become so obvious after just one day, but we must have the patience and faith to know that God will surely change our circumstances into something beautiful.

And this concludes the end of this post. Persevere in your studies and don’t ditch class!

Hi guys! Welcome to the second week of our awesome fun-filled month of April!

The post-college group just had our own retreat with Ajith Fernando today and it was so amazing to hear him speak of the experience and stories he and his friends experienced living in Sri Lanka.  I’m so excited to hear him speak again tomorrow at Kofman! Rides will be starting at 9AM.  It’s $5 for lunch (good deal!).  The shuttle will be on Oak for those who are going home early.

Next week, Professor William Lane Craig, a world-renowned Christian debater will be coming to our Rise event on Saturday for the youth! The college students will be sitting in the overflow at Willard to listen on his presentation of the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ! Exciting!! More details are to come!

Before that though, we’ll be having homegroup bible studies on Friday! I’ll let you know later on where it’s going to be and what the game plan is. So stay tuned!

Now for another edition of Guess who! So the answer was…. drum roll please…

John Chung!!! Suzanne was our winner!

Man, you guys were hurting last time so hopefully, this week all of you can get it right.  This week, though, we’ll have 2 entries! You’ll have to get both in order to get the point! First person to get it right gets double points!

When I was in 2nd grade, I had gone three days without my Flintstone daily vitamins so I took four at a time to make up for it.

Until 1st grade my hair was short like a boy because my parents kept cutting my hair. They didn’t like how crazy my hair was and believed that cultural practice could work against genetics. They kept cutting my hair in hopes that one day it would grow out calm and straight. It never worked.
