July 4th Potluck

Last Wednesday, when the staff were having fun at Sand Harbor, the Koinonia seniors had the opportunity to host the undergrads. And what better way to do it than with a July 4th Potluck and Games! That’s right, Koinonia got to enjoy a delicious and patriotic potluck! Our Welcome Team was dressed in Red White and Blue, we had “God Bless the USA” blasting out of the speakers, we had tables decorated and named after the original 13 colonies, and we even had a history quiz about the origins of our country to determine who was the most American!
(Who would have known that the Declaration of Independence started with “When” and not “We”…)

But aside from our patriotism, we got to enjoy lots of delicious food! People have been putting their cooking skills to good use this summer! Just look at these pictures:

So many yummy food choices!

All that delicious kim bap is just waiting to be eaten.

Who can resist a salad, especially when it’s patriotic? Isn’t salad great?

Look at those amazing cookies!

We even had patriotic dessert: two well decorated American Flag cakes!

Man those cakes were delicious!

Who wouldn’t be happy after such an awesome meal?

After filling our stomachs with all that amazing cooking, we participated in a game called the Amazing Race. We all split up into groups and had a blast running around campus frantically trying to complete a long list of patriotic tasks.

To demonstrate how far we would go in the name of our country, we did a series of interesting things such as chanting “USA, USA, USA” for a period of time as we scurried around campus (which happened to draw very confused looks from many people nearby), going to Memorial Glade to sing the Star Spangled Banner at the top of our lungs, re-enacting the Boston Tea Party at Sproul Fountain, and then rounding the whole time off with appointing a team member to imitate King George III for an indefinite period of time.

And we did all of this and more in under 50 minutes! Needless to say, we all had a good laugh at the expense of our teammates as many of us cast aside all dignity in order to complete these tasks. And even more laughter ensued when each team presented the evidence, in the form of pictures and videos, of their valiant attempts at patriotism.

Here’s some pictures from the race!

Team Massachusetts posing as Lady Freedom

Team Rhode Island doing a very traditional Asian pose?

Team New Jersey taking an inspirational photo. Guess what it is!

And my personal favorite came from Team Massachusetts who very creatively spelled out “Courage” or “Freedom” with their shadows.

What a day of patriotic fun, food and laughter! Be sure to join us next time!
