Welcome Wilson & Becky!

Wilson and Becky recently joined our homegroup staff and we are all happy to have them and baby Natalie as new additions to our group!  I go back a long way with Wilson and Becky as they were freshmen when I was a first year staff intern.  Wilson was actually in my small group during his freshman year.  So I would like to share a great Wilson moment with you all.

In my first year as college staff, I had the privilege of hearing with my own ears one of the most unforgettable statements I’ve ever heard in all my 11 years of doing college ministry.  On the first night I met Wilson, he told me that he was planning to walk on to the basketball team… yes, the Cal basketball team!  Now, he did not say this as some lighthearted joke in order to break the ice.  No, he was dead serious.  No one to this day quite understands why he believed he would be able to walk on to the Cal team.  I mean, he was a skinny, Chinese-American boy; he did not play on his high school basketball team; and up to that point in his life had never beaten his dad in a game of one-on-one.

We may never be able to understand why he thought so, but I’m just really glad he shared that with me that fateful night.  Because this story has been a source of much encouragement and joy to many generations of students since.  In fact, Pastor Ed used to share this story every year in his Bible studies as an illustration of delusion.

Not Wilson.

Not Wilson.

But much has changed since Wilson was  a deluded freshman.  And after many faithful years serving as staff in our San Francisco ministry, we welcome him and Becky back to Berkeley!

haha, I love how the first introduction of Wilson from Joe is this amazing story of Wilson’s awesomeness and delusion =) I’m sure I speak for the SF College folk that we’ll miss you two. BTW, a very fun activity that some of the bros here in SF started playing was – count the number of times Wilson shoots vs. passes in a friendly game of pickup. It’s quite amusing =)

  7. Johnny says:

in his defense, Wilson is one of the better male nurses I’ve played against
