For all Christians: our Praise Night is coming up!! In addition to rockin’ praise and worship at our new student center at Buffet Town, the Praise Night will also be an introduction to discipleship in Koinonia.

Dinner won’t be provided, but we’ll have snacks afterwards.

I hope everyone’s first day of classes went well! Hopefully no one got lost and found themselves in the wrong room (that has definitely happened to me before!).

Well if you enjoyed any of our Welcome Week events, NSWN, or are just sitting there wondering what “Koinonia” means, then come to our Koinonia Kickoff! It’s this coming Friday, August 27, at 7:30 pm.

Just like NSWN, there will be live music, a new skit, a thought-provoking talk, fun games, and free boba! It’s all happening at 2050 VLSB (Valley Life Sciences Building).

Afterwards, we’ll also play exciting team games and sports at the Maxwell Family Field!

Come and bring your friends and floormates!
Hope to see you there!

This past weekend, the upperclassmen from A2F, Kairos, and Koinonia had a combined discipleship retreat with Pastor Ed and Kelly at Sierra Lodge where we had a time of fellowship, studying God’s Word, and casting visions together.

Those of us who were able to get a day off of work, don’t have class on Fridays, or just wanted to chill, headed up to Sierra Lodge early and spent the day at Lake Tahoe. We had an awesome time swimming and kayaking in the lake, trying to catch little fish with our bare hands (which proved to be impossible), and getting our friends as wet as possible without capsizing our own kayaks. I’m sure we all returned to Sierra Lodge several shades darker than we were when we first left it.

When the rest of the upperclassmen arrived Friday night (for a total of 120 students/staff!), we got started right away as Pastor Ed and Kelly started off the retreat with our first session—a review of the gospel through Genesis, and the theme of entrustment as shown in 2 Timothy. We were all reminded of the life changing treasure that each of us has been entrusted with, how we have received the gospel message through reliable men, and how we are also called to become those reliable men who preserve and guard this treasure.

Other sessions throughout the weekend included reflecting on the picture of wisdom illustrated in the book of Proverbs, looking at Apostle Paul’s relationships and reevaluating our own criteria for feeling close to people, and listening to an inspiring message, “the local church is the hope of the world,” by Bill Hybels.

Hearty meals (bomb pulled-pork-sandwiches), fun at the lake, singing hymns around the campfire, late-night basketball fellowship, and simply spending the weekend with all of our peers really put the icing on the cake.

We ended our time at the retreat with a time of casting visions of where our church will be in 10 years. Expansion of our Interhigh ministry, homegrown leaders in our sister church in Taiwan, church plants at every UC—let’s remain faithful in sharing the gospel and maturing spiritually so that these visions may become a reality!

Koinonia 10K Group

Today we held the first-ever Koinonia 10K Run for Hunger! All our registration fees went towards supporting World Vision’s 30-Hour Famine, a program to raise awareness and money to fight world hunger.

Waking up bright and early, two groups started at 6:20am and 7am to run along Alameda’s beautiful beach. Everyone ran their hearts out! It was a wonderful time of fellowshipping through small physical suffering for a good cause. Hopefully the 10K will encourage all of us to pursue greater physical and spiritual discipline!

Here are some great pics and videos documenting the pre- and post-race scene! Wow, it was such an EPIC race! See you at next year’s Run for Hunger!

Last week, our three sisters (Esther, Joy, and Virginia) left for Taiwan to help with the church plant there. We’ll miss them :*(.

We also began preparations for the epic New Student Welcome Night that’s looming over the horizon!

Sorry guys, here is the Keep-in-Touch (KIT) that was supposed to be posted like a week ago. Just totally ignore the last part of the announcements about the sophomore discipleship retreat because that was in the past…so it is not relevant now… Anyways, here is the KIT of the senior discipleship peer trip with Steve and Suzanne and Johnny and Kristen about 2 weeks ago!

Sorry, for some reason the video quality got messed up during the upload…but don’t complain! I’m not complaining! Be content as Paul was, as mentioned in Philippians 4:11 =D.

Hey guys, here is this week’s KIT. We briefly interviewed some people on their thoughts and experiences with MYT, Impact Summerfest, and Worldview Camp.

Don’t forget, this Saturday we have 30-Hour Famine, so steel yourselves for an epic weekend.

Koinonia will be sponsoring our very own 10K – Run For Hunger!
Some info about the race:
- You can choose between a 10K run, a 5K run or a 5K walk!
- All the staff will be running or walking, including our very own directors, Steve and Suzanne!

This past week’s BBQin’ did not end with the Korean BBQ after NSWN. We had an awesome BBQ at Dana House this past Wednesday. We had juicy patties, smokin’ franks, and sizzlin’ Korean marinated beef, not to mention, a raffle, prizes, and a giant round of King Kong Shower. Don’t believe me? Check out the [...]

Night Market!!

Aug 26 | 4 Comments

If you didn’t come to Night Market this past Monday, you sure missed out on an amazing event! There were so many people coming from every corner of the campus (evident by the dorm teams) at Barrows Courtyard trying out the free Asian foods in a pseudo-Night Market style.  One sophomore came 30 minutes early [...]

More than 100 of us crashed Willard Field and had some awesome games of ultimate frisbee, post-world cup soccer, 4-on-4 basketball, and a girls-only game of solitary frisbee! We all had a good workout and had lots of [...]

Games!

Aug 23 | 5 Comments

Welcome week is notoriously boring, and we love remedying this age old problem! Last night Koinonia got together for a rousing time of games. We played Human Bingo – a game of bold claims! Words cannot describe all that happened, but suffice it to say many strong impressions were made…images that have [...]

This past Friday we had a cozy Bible Study starting with a great dinner and a walk to the ocean! Here’s some pictures: For our Bible study, Steve shared from Mark 12 about what it means to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. We all took a moment to [...]

Weekend of Happiness

May 10 | 7 Comments

This past Sunday was also the senior’s epic Graduation Sunday! The seniors superbly sang a sweet and sure-to-honor-God song (I just used alliteration, for those engineers out there who might have been befuddled at the presence of so many “s”s). Photo courtesy of Mike Chen. For me, I was impacted by the growth of these seniors as they [...]

Congratulations Becky and Daniel! They got baptized a few weeks ago, but the pictures just came in! After last week’s Bible Study, we had our final Maxwell Field Night of the year, featuring some great class competition! The freshmen are improving fast, but couldn’t keep up with the mighty seniors, who were determined to end their [...]

Sierra Lodge Glory

May 5 | 6 Comments

The challenge: The guys must charge up the steep, soft hill, capture the sleds and ride down to glory. But the girls, frosh guys, and frosh bro staff are fiercely resisting them with snow projectiles. The result is some glorious fun.
